2. MEMBER CONDUCT.

A. Community Guidelines. When you use the Communication Tools, you may have the opportunity to disclose, post, or otherwise upload to publicly accessible portions of the OT Connections Site, or share with other Participants information and other content, including but not limited to, biographical information, photographs, and stories (collectively, the "Content"). While we may provide you with these tools and opportunities, we also wish to remind you that you should choose carefully which information you post on the OT Connections site and that you provide to other Participants.

You are required to use the Communication Tools responsibly, just as you would act responsibly when communicating or interacting with others in your offline communities. As a result, we expect and require that you take full responsibility for the Content that you post or send through the OT Connections site. We have established some Community Guidelines that we hope will increase your awareness of your responsibilities to others when using the Communication Tools and will enhance your enjoyment of our OT Connections site. These Guidelines are incorporated by reference into this Terms of Use. We may update these Guidelines from time to time. In addition to your adherence to the Guidelines, you specifically agree to comply with all applicable laws concerning the transmission of technical data exported from the United States or the country you reside in.

The following Community Guidelines apply to and govern your use of the Communication Tools:

15. GUIDELINES FOR ONLINE FORUMS.

AOTA's Online Forums provide opportunities for members to network, exchange ideas, share experiences, and offer solutions to everyday workplace issues online at www.otconnections.org or via e-mail. While AOTA retains the right to remove any messages from this site that do not meet the purposes stated above, AOTA staff and the SIS Standing Committee members cannot review each message to determine its accuracy or truthfulness, or determine if the content of any message contains any prohibited material referenced in the following guidelines.

Consequently, any reader who is offended by any message, or who finds that any message violates the guidelines should report the message to otconnections@aota.org or by Reporting Abuse by clicking on the "More" option in the particular discussion.

Forum participants who disregard these guidelines will be warned privately by message or e-mail on the first incident and removed from the Web site on the second incident.

The following guidelines are intended to help you get the most benefit from the Forums and to protect the good of all parties.

  • When asking for assistance with programming or a project (school or work) make your request for assistance as specific as possible and show that you have already done some work (e.g., don't ask, "Can someone recommend articles that I should read?" or "How would I start programming in....?" You may ask for people with experience in a particular area to contact you "off forum" providing your e-mail and asking them to e-mail you directly. Don't ask others to do basic work for you.
  • Keep the Forum discussions relevant to their practice domains (e.g., administration and management issues on the AMSIS Forum). Members are encouraged to participate by asking and answering questions and sharing resources and information. You may post the same question on more than one Forum but should tailor language to inform participants as to how the question is relevant to their area of practice.
  • Note that AOTA, as sponsor and administrator of the forums, from time to time will alert members of products and services available from AOTA or make requests for assistance when in the best interests of AOTA members.
  • Maintain professional standards and common courtesy in Forum messages, avoiding the use of insults, slander, profanity, or obscenities. Do not divulge confidential information or information that may cause harm to a consumer or client. Review postings before sending, especially on topics that may be controversial, as hastily composed, unclear messages can easily be misinterpreted.
  • Remember that postings are a permanent form of communication that may also be used as evidence in a legal proceeding.
  • The Forums may not be used for job advertising or for recruiting occupational therapy practitioners. The Forums also may not be used for the sale of services or products, but members may make suggestions in direct response to a posted question such as recommending the use of a specific assessment or naming a company where a product may be found. In addition, the Forums may not be used to compare the costs of occupational therapy professional services as this might be construed as price setting and a violation of federal or state laws.
  • Members who submit posts may suggest their own products, assessments, etc. ONLY in response to a query from another user. In the response it must be clear that the person who is posting the information would gain financially from the sale of the item, and only a brief description with a link to an external Web site or contact information is permitted. Any follow-up discussion must take place privately between the requester and the person offering the product. AOTA does not endorse any products mentioned in the Forums.
  • The Forums may not be used as a primary source to conduct research, although members may post notices of research studies and inform members who wish to participate who to contact and how to enroll.
  • The Forums may not be used to post surveys. Members who are interested in publicizing a survey or who are soliciting participants may do a posting of 2 to 3 sentences that announces/summarizes the survey, provides a link to the survey, and includes private contact information (e-mail or phone) for reader follow up. Survey announcements can be posted to a maximum of 3 Forums, and the topic must be appropriate to the Forum(s). Additional postings will be removed by the OT Connections administrator.
  • Do not post any information or material protected by copyright without the permission of the copyright owner. An exception is to quote a portion of properly cited copyrighted material in connection with a scholarly analysis, research, or comment on the work.
  • Do not post messages that encourage or facilitate members to arrive at any agreement that either states or implies information that leads to price fixing, a boycott of another's business, or other conduct intended to or that results in illegally restricting free trade.
  • Do not facilitate or engage in inappropriate discussions relating to people, entities, products, costs, rumors, and other similar matters. Information posted on the Forums is available for all to see, and comments are subject to libel, antitrust, and a variety of other laws.
  • Do not post anything that you would not want the world to see or that you would not want anyone to know came from you, as the discussions are meant to stimulate conversation, not create contention.

Forum Archives

  • Forum postings are archived on OTConnections.
  • Blogs, Groups, and Forums with no activity after 6 months will be deleted by the OT Connections administrator.

Forum Etiquette

  • Restrict discussions to topics best suited to the medium. Only post a message to a Forum when it contains information from which everyone can benefit.
  • Clearly state the specific topic of the posting in the subject line to allow members to respond more appropriately, enhance searchability, and allow automatic message archiving.
  • Include a signature tag on all postings. Include your name, affiliation, location, and e-mail address..
  • Avoid posting messages such as "thanks for the information" or "me, too" to the entire list.

16. GROUP GUIDELINES.

OTConnections Groups provide a platform on which users can create and join managed communities based on shared interests or experiences. New groups must be unique—if there is already a related group, the group risks closure by the OTConnections administrator. Groups may include un-moderated content containing personal opinions and other information posted by their members. Group participants agree not to use the Groups for any activity that violates any federal, state, or local law. All group participants agree not to post or facilitate the posting of any material in violation of these Terms of Use. AOTA reserves the right to remove all or any portion of a Group from the platform at any time and at AOTA's sole discretion.

Inactive Groups
We encourage users to actively use and promote the Groups they have created. Groups may be permanently removed due to prolonged inactivity. Inactivity is determined based on a combination of Group activity and number of Group members. Groups will be deleted after 6 months of inactivity. Groups with fewer than 5 active members risk closure. Group owners are always welcome to re-create a group at a future date when they are better able to facilitate the growth of the group.

17. BLOG GUIDELINES.

OTConnections provides a blogging platform for all users. To start a blog, send an e-mail to social@aota.org with your username, desired name of blog, and a description of the blog to get started. We encourage users to actively use and promote their blog. Blogs may be permanently removed due to prolonged inactivity. Inactivity is determined based on a combination of post activity and number of posts in a 6-month period. Blogs will be deleted after 6 months of inactivity. Blogs with fewer than 5 posts risk closure. Blog owners are always welcome to re-create a blog at a future date.
