Terms of Use

Community Guidelines. OT Connections was created by AOTA for Participants to share a variety of ideas and resources about occupational therapy. The OT Connections site contains areas that enable Participants of the community to communicate and share information through Forums, Groups, Galleries, and Blogs where you may interact with other Participants through posting or sharing of content (collectively the "Communication Tools"). When you use the Communication Tools, you may have the opportunity to disclose, post, or otherwise upload to publicly accessible portions of the OT Connections site, or share with other Participants information and other content, including but not limited to, biographical information, photographs, and stories (collectively, the "Content")..

The following Community Guidelines apply to and govern your use of the Communication Tools. We may update these Guidelines from time to time. In addition to your adherence to the Guidelines, you specifically agree to comply with all applicable laws concerning the transmission of technical data exported from the United States or the country in which you reside.

  • Treat others in the community with respect. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, as long as it does not violate these guidelines. Opinions are not right or wrong.
  • AOTA, as sponsor and administrator of the forums, from time to time will alert members of products and services available from AOTA or make requests for assistance (e.g., reviewing drafts of documents).
  • Don't harass others, which is defined here as repeating the same requests, demanding responses, questioning the validity of others’ opinions, questioning or assuming others’ motives, or personally insulting others.
  • Do not engage in “trolling,” which is defined here as sowing discord by posting inflammatory, extraneous, disrespectful, rude, untrue, and/or off-topic messages.
  • Don't provide any correspondence with another party without such party's permission.
  • Don't post others’ telephone numbers, street addresses, full names, URLs, or e-mail addresses without their consent.
  • Don't upload, post, e-mail, transmit, or otherwise make available ("provide") any content that is unlawful, libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, indecent, lewd, harassing, threatening, harmful, invasive of privacy or publicity rights, abusive, inflammatory, or otherwise objectionable.
  • Don't use other participants' personal data for purposes other than establishing contact that is reasonably expected to be welcomed.
  • Don't provide any content that encourages a criminal offense or violates the rights of any party.
  • Don't impersonate anyone else or misrepresent your affiliation with a person or entity.
  • Don't participate in any unauthorized or unsolicited promotions, advertising, "junk mail," "spam," "chain letters," "pyramid schemes," or any other form of solicitation, or otherwise use the OT Connections site for a commercial purpose.
  • Don't violate any applicable local, state, national, and international law or regulation.
  • Don't interfere with, interrupt, destroy, or limit the functionality of the OT Connections site or any computer software or hardware or telecommunications equipment.
  • Don't try to gain unauthorized access to the OT Connections site, other participants' accounts, or computers connected to the OT Connections site.
  • Any reader who is offended by any message, or who believes that any message violates the Community Guidelines, should report the message to otconnections@aota.org or by Reporting Abuse by clicking on the "More" option in the particular discussion.
  • You may post the same information on up to three forums but should tailor language to inform participants as to how the question is relevant to that area of practice.
  • OT Connections may not be used for job advertising or for recruiting occupational therapy practitioners. OT Connections also may not be used for the sale of services or products, but members may make suggestions in direct response to a posted question such as recommending the use of a specific assessment or naming a company where a product may be found. In addition, OT Connections may not be used to compare the costs of occupational therapy professional services as this might be construed as price setting and a violation of federal or state laws.
  • Members may suggest their own products, assessments, etc. ONLY in response to a query from another user. In the response it must be clear that the person who is posting the information would gain financially from the sale of the item, and only a brief description with a link to an external Web site or contact information is permitted. Any follow-up discussion must take place privately between the requester and the person offering the product. AOTA does not endorse any products mentioned on OT Connections.
  • OT Connections may not be used as a primary source to conduct research, although members may post notices of research studies and inform members who wish to participate who to contact and how to enroll.
  • OT Connections may not be used to post surveys. Members who are interested in publicizing a survey or who are soliciting participants may do a posting of 2 to 3 sentences that announces/summarizes the survey, provides a link to the survey, and includes private contact information (e-mail or phone) for reader follow up. Survey announcements can be posted to a maximum of 3 forums, and the topic must be appropriate to the Forum(s). Additional postings will be removed by the OT Connections administrator.
  • Do not post any information or material protected by copyright without the permission of the copyright owner. An exception is to quote a portion of properly cited copyrighted material in connection with a scholarly analysis, research, or comment on the work.
  • Do not post messages that encourage or facilitate members to arrive at any agreement that either states or implies information that leads to price fixing, a boycott of another's business, or other conduct intended to or that results in illegally restricting free trade.
  • Do not facilitate or engage in inappropriate discussions relating to people, entities, products, costs, rumors, and other similar matters. Information posted on the Forums is available for all to see, and comments are subject to libel, antitrust, and a variety of other laws. Remember that postings are a permanent form of communication that may also be used as evidence in a legal proceeding.

OT Connections participants who disregard these guidelines will be warned privately and/or suspended or banned from the site. AOTA reserves the right to seek indemnification from any person or entity for any expense or damage suffered by AOTA arising from or relating to liability of said person's or entity's use of the OT Connections site.

Monitoring and Enforcement. We do not actively monitor the forums and other Communication Tools or the content that is posted or provided through such tools, nor are we obligated to do so. Our spam filter may catch content that does not violate the guidelines; items in the spam filter are regularly reviewed by AOTA staff and either released to the site (if appropriate) or deleted. Because we don't have the ability to control or actively monitor the content, we do not guarantee its accuracy, integrity, or quality. AOTA reserves the right to remove, at any time, any information posted or provided through the Communication Tools. However, because situations and interpretations vary, we also reserve the right not to take any action. In such cases, we may not remove content that you believe is objectionable or offensive. Please remember that you can always choose to refrain from using any part of the OT Connections site that exposes you to something that you are uncomfortable with. Under no circumstances will we be liable in any way for any Content, including, but not limited to, any errors or omissions in any content, or any loss or damage of any kind incurred as a result of the use of, access to, or denial of access to, any content.

GROUPS, BLOGS, AND FORUMS

OT Connections Groups provide a platform in which users can create and join managed communities based on shared interests or experiences. New groups must be unique—if there is already a related group, the new group will not be approved. Groups may include un-moderated content containing personal opinions and other information posted by their members. Groups may be open (anyone can join), open but require the owner’s permission to join, or closed. Group participants agree not to use the Groups for any activity that violates any federal, state, or local law. All group participants agree not to post or facilitate the posting of any material in violation of these Terms of Use. AOTA reserves the right to remove all or any portion of a Group from the platform at any time and at AOTA’s sole discretion.

You may request a new Group by sending an email to otconnections@aota.org. We encourage users to actively use and promote the Groups they have created. Groups will be deleted after 6 months of inactivity. Inactivity is determined based on a combination of Group activity and number of Group members. Groups with fewer than 5 active members risk closure. Group owners are always welcome to re-create a group at a future date when they are better able to facilitate the growth of the group.

To start a blog on OT Connections, send an e-mail to otconnections@aota.org with your username, desired name of blog, and a description of the blog. We encourage users to actively use and promote their blog. Blogs may be permanently removed due to prolonged inactivity. Inactivity is determined based on a combination of post activity and number of posts in a 6-month period. Blogs will be deleted after 6 months of inactivity. Blogs with fewer than 5 posts risk closure. Blog owners are always welcome to re-create a blog at a future date.

Users are encouraged to share information in existing forum threads when appropriate, and to create new threads for new content. Forums with limited activity will be deleted. You must be signed in to leave a comment.
