Hello to all occupational therapists
I am undertaking a survey of occupational therapists (which is completely voluntary and anonymous) The survey aims to identify the current practices used by occupational therapists in prescribing assistive technology for people living at home with dementia, to reduce or prevent unsafe wandering in the community.
If you are interested please click on the link below. If you have any questions I can be contacted at email address fjarvis@uni.sydney.edu.au or wildbeez@bigpond.com.

Ms. Jarvis,
Your link isnt embedded so I cant link on it. You can cut your html and paste it in the body of your message and people can take the quiz or survey right here. You can also use wordpress to cycle people to survey monkey where it looks like you created it. I cant cut and paste from the computer lab I use in the mornings ...any computer (especially campus, library, or apt comp labs) generally disable that function to help protect users.
However I find lamenated memo's with a loved one they recognize image to be the best for wanderers so far. They have to the memo e.g. wife of newly diagnosed alz pt lamenated pic on an large note card saying dont leave without calling me (and listed phone number) sticking it above door knob. With more progressed patients setting up good "feng shui" that creates movement to places you desire (sitting areas that have memorabiliia books etc..) the idea is to encourage the wandering YOU WANT rather than trying to inhibit what is natural. The "weebeejeebeez" as my grandfather put it...is this unsettling feeling that you need to "solve" something and you cant rest until your mind reaches some sort of conclusion. My grandfather slowly slipped into dementia and wandering till late in the middle of the night he would try to escape out of "prison" which was actually his hospital bed...rather than trying to inhibit what the brain is asking for feed it...if the bed is on the floor with no rails there is less of a desire to "escape" over rails.

Additionally the OT association of Australia NSW has a link on their website at the moment for all visitors to their web site under the heading What's New. The web address is

If this doesn't work I will give Wordpress a go.
