Today I begin my journey of entering the profession of Occupational Therapy

This opportunity has been a long time coming. Twenty two years ago a friend told me about Occupational Therapy and I just knew I needed to be a part of that profession. I started my education in Occupational Therapy at the local University and then life happened, I was pulled in another direction. I eventually became educated in another profession that I loved but over time felt unfulfilled. Now I have the opportunity to come back to my first passion and I am ready! I hope to learn as much as I can about Occupational Therapy from those who came before me and really make a difference in the lives of those I still have the pleasure of meeting. Some day I may even be able to contribute a new idea to the profession! I love learning (even though I struggle at times), but I hope to continue my education as far as I am able to take it.

My fears at the start of this journey are feelings of anxiety over the reading assignments and retaining the information. I find that while I read I get easily distracted by things around me as well as my internal voice and I am unable to stay focused which causes more anxiety. I believe this has also caused test anxiety because I don't feel as prepared as I should be. I have been in an intense educational program before and was successful so I am hoping to turn my fears into accomplishment!

  • My fears are identical to yours. I get distracted so easily when I read and even though I change my surroundings and retain it better, I still feel overwhelmed and anxious. Good Luck!

  • I think a lot of our fears are the same but I think as they year goes along we will all find ways to help eachother study or find certain ways to help us overcome our fears. very good paula!!

  • Just remember that everything in life happens for a reason! Maybe there is a reason why you are now doing this twenty two years later, you just might not know it yet!

  • I agreee with Tanner you obviously are here for a reason if this profession has pulled you back over the years. I am also easily distracted when it comes to reading long periods of time. Limfetime movies dont help me either! Nice blog!

  • One of my favorite things you said was "life happens"..that is soo true! We never understand why things happen, but each experience helps us grow and be wiser and turn into wonderful ladies such as yourself :)

  • I agree with Laura, "life happens" is a great way to explain it. I believe each of is here in the COTA program for a reason.

  • Great Blog! I think that you're going to be a great OTA because you have the passion and the drive to get you to where you want to be!  I definitely have the same fears as you do and can relate.
