Speaking of primary care, I know there are folks in the West Coast who are trying to push for OT's presence in primary care. In this year's OTAC Annual Conference, we actually have a conference presentation on such a topic. It will be on the last session of the afternoon of the last day (Sunday, October 7th).

Thanks for your reply. AOTA is advocating for occupational therapy's involvement in the ACO's that are developing around the country.

OT practitioners can bring a perspective and expertise to providing care within the context of the individual’s daily life to virtually every phase of care. We are encouraging OT practitioners to find ACO's developing in their area and to get involved. The Health Care Reform Ad-Hoc has an ACO/Medical Home work group who is focused working to develop resources to assist practitioners in getting involved. I can assure you that AOTA does see and understand need for occupational therapy's to further develop and articulate the role of our practitioners in the primary care initiative.

Are you able to share more information about the primary care initiative? I am a little unsure if AOTA is interested in advocating new ACO models for OTs to function within or if you are looking at advantaging something that is already actually existing in practice. Is this an issue that is impacting any therapists currently, or is this just conceptualization? What resources are being directed toward these efforts, and what are the goals associated with those investments?

Thanks for any clarity you might offer. As an AOTA member who own a private practice and who encounters people on a 'primary' level to some degree I am interested in understanding what the AOTA goals actually are in this area.

Since I am doing my OTD this school year, so I am doing this in a small scale way. But after next summer, aside from teaching the course I develop for my OTD project at USC and hopefully find a few research partners in OT in autism, I would like to travel around the country to speak to OT and OTA students from different programs on how to assist individuals with autism. I believe that the students can benefit from hearing about autism from a consumer who knows the nuts and bolts of OT. I also believe that can also spark some students' interests in getting involved in our profession, too.

I agree we need to be in on the ground floor on the autism issue. This

is an important topic to the community we serve, clients, practitioners, and students. The membership needs to be ready to assist AOTA in this effort.

One notable challenge & opportunities is caused by the changes that will be made in DSM V, with autism getting a lot of the headlines. I think the next few months will be critical, as I believe AOTA has to get the inside scoop of the changes, so that new/revised fact sheets and positional statements can be made when the changes become official.

Have some practice and you will get it. :) I had a crash course with some hardcore OT tweeters and now I am pretty proficient at it. You just need to know how to shorten your words when appropriate.

Ditto Emily's comment. I think Twitter is where learning and advocacy can take to a whole new level.

Yesterday I had my 4rd Twitter chat with our counterparts in the UK. The exchange of ideas, theories, and concepts was just incredible as always. Unless the topic is specialized (like the autism topic two weeks ago), we "take turns" asking and answering questions from the chatting crew.
