Conclave: EZ-Pass makes life easier

Published 22 Sep 2009 8:43 PM

One of my least favorite parts of driving—especially on road trips—is paying tolls. Every time I plan a trip, I always try to find out whether the route I’m taking will have toll roads. If there is a toll, how much will it cost? Finally, will I have to pay cash for the toll? I rarely carry cash, so this last step is crucial.

The worst part is driving up to a toll plaza, being stuck in traffic to wait to pay for the toll, and seeing those lucky few cars zip through the EZ-Pass lane. I watch with envy as the magical device hanging on their windshield signals the toll plaza that indeed the driver will pay for the toll, but later when a bill is sent directly to their home, making waiting in a line an unnecessary step on their travels.

I was the proud owner of an EZ-Pass once upon a time, for the causeway over Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans, which meant I got to experience the “thrill” of zipping by the lines of cars waiting to pay their tolls with cash. So, I can honestly report to you that owning the EZ-Pass truly makes one’s life easier. In fact, it would be immensely helpful if an EZ-Pass was available for other areas of life, like an EZ-Pass for the grocery store checkout line.

I have good news for you students! This year at Conclave, you will have the opportunity to (metaphorically) get an EZ-Pass for the NBCOT exam. On Saturday, November 21, you can attend the sessions on the realities and myths of the OTR examination or the COTA examination. You will hear tips on preparing for the exam, learn how the examination templates are constructed, and have an overview of the test format (including some sample test items). Taking the NBCOT exam will most likely be your first step after graduating so attending this session will hopefully help you be in the EZ-Pass lane when that time arrives.
