Conclave: Soon you can leave mom at home
I don’t know about your state, but growing up in Louisiana I had to have a driver’s permit for 6 months before being able to get my driver’s license. I remember those 6 months vividly. My poor mother never had to go on so many errands because every chance I’d get, I would suggest another place that we had to drive to so that I could get behind the wheel and drive, with my mom in the passenger seat.
I drove my mom to my soccer practice, to church, to the store, to restaurants, to coffee shops—which makes me pretty confident to say that she was relieved when I could finally drive on my own.
Graduating college and transitioning to the “real world” is a lot like going from having a driver’s permit to having a full-on driver’s license. While your fieldwork and classes definitely taught you skills and imparted a lot of knowledge, there is just something quite different about driving on your own, leaving mom at home, and going out on the open road.
As fun as it is to have your “driver’s license,” it is also a little scary to think that you won’t necessarily have someone in the passenger seat giving you much-wanted instructions anymore. This is why I think the perfect Conclave session for those of you who may be nervous about your next step is “Tools for Transitioning from Student to Entry-Level Practitioner.” The session is Saturday, November 21 at 4:30 p.m.
Unlike some professions with dismal job markets, we know that occupational therapy is experiencing job growth, but the question is “how do you find the best job fit for you?” This session will teach you the strategies and resources available to ensure a smooth transition from student to practitioner.
