A snarky NY Times article about using OTs for handwriting in elite NY schools...

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/25/fashion/25Therapy.html

I found this article on Fark.com, with a link to NY Times, with the tag "Asinine" and the snarky headline "Spoiled NYC parents hire high-priced occupational therapists to train their precious snowflakes to hold a pencil or wield scissors  (nytimes.com)"

I skimmed the 100+ comments on the NY Times article plus the 50+ comments on Fark.com about it, and while I was heartened to see some parents and OTs speak up, there was an awful lot of irritation as well. I think the article was poorly done and made OTs look like just another high-priced special service offered to the elite babies of Manhattan versus an actual profession in all its diversity and AMAZINGNESS. :)

I hope some of you OTs - including me - get onto that New York Times website and start posting rebuttals with examples of what OT *really* is (usually)....not to say those OTs in the article aren't doing good things, we just need to make it clear we are so much more than that!

WOW - thanks for posting this here - I would have missed it otherwise. I just read it and wanted to comment, but they were no longer accepting comments. I am deeply disturbed by the suggestion that OTs are pricey professionals who no longer serve the needy, but the rich. The comments posted, even the ones in favor of OT, were all indicating that handwriting does, in fact, in some instances require the help of an OT, but there was no indication at all as to what is required to make that determination....what our contributions and expertise is.....let alone that we do very much serve the needy.....I am just without words!

If they are no longer accepting reader comments, you could always write a letter to the editor.

I have written a letter to the editor on behalf of AOTA. We saw this and are surprising.
