Hi Friends!
Just recently, an ECU colleague asked me why I wanted to run for a national office when I told her I was nominated for WFOT delegate. The question is a good one as I do not need it for promotion and I do more service than required by the University already, so there is no external motivation. I want to be the delegate for WFOT(!) and internally motivated to do fulfill the responsibilities as well as I am able.
I have a long time interest in other countries and cultures. Although I did not travel early in my career, I have been to other countries, usually for conferences, since being in academia. During the conferences, I make a point of spending time with occupational therapists from the respective countries as well as other visitors. There is a common core through occupational therapy and it is so delightful to think of the many friends I have made over the years from all over the world. Regardless of the outcome of the election, I look forward to the conference in Chile because I know I will see many of those friends there. I also have tried to learn how occupational therapy is the same and different in other parts of the world. Last March I spent two weeks in Kuwait - quite an adventure and I learned so very much about the culture of the Middle East.
I want to be delegate because I think it will be a challenge for me and I surely will develop professionally participating on the global level. On the other hand, I think a person who is the delegate must bring strengths to the position. As delegate for AOTA, the individual must have knowledge, skills, and wisdom to be able to participate in discussions as a member of this prestigious group. I believe through life experiences, leadership opportunities as chair of the Professional Program Directors Educational Council for six years, as editor of Occupational Therapy in Health Care, a researcher who has worked in international groups, and my delight in working with students, I believe I have the appropriate skills to do well in the position.
Please send me any questions or comments you might have about my background, experience, or ideas. I would love to hear from you and respond!
